"The
scenery was awesome, bighorn sheep and lots of eagles. We were impressed
by the service and they were able to answer our questions. The guides
gave great interpretive talks. They served us bannock, and Indian

"I
have been out with Cariboo Chilcotin Jetboat Adventures on the Fraser
River more than once and enjoyed the view of the Fraser River going
up stream and down. I really like the fact that we can go ashore
at any time to explore and take beautiful pictures. Also the fact
that the ride in the boat makes it easy for one to take pictures
of wild life. I feel very safe in the boat even in the white water
rapids. The all day trip with a cook out meal was very relaxing
and is one that I would do again with my friends."

THE
WILLIAMS LAKE TRIBUNE
Adventures on the Fraser
By Stephenie Campbell
The
river is alive.
It
gushes and gurgles, rushing over hidden rocks and through jagged
canyons, running relentlessly all the way to the sea. From the middle
of the rushing Fraser River, everything seems to take on a new life.
The
sun glints on the water, as golden eagles fly overhead and Bighorn
Sheep peek curiously over the edge of a precipice high above the
river. The moonscape of the sandy hoodoos on the one side contrasts
with the cool, shadowy forest on the other. Tumble - down cabins
left behind by long - ago miners stand sentinel over the Fraser,
while petroglyphs remember the First Nations people who first travelled
the river. Doug Green is plying the waters of the Fraser in a much
swifter fashion than his ancestors did, but his appreciation of
who came before him remains strong.
"What
amazes me is you think back to the way it was in the old days."
Green says. "This whole river was covered in people, looking
for gold."
Green
and his partner Charlene Lupien have found a pretty darn exciting
way to explore the Fraser. Their new family enterprise, Cariboo
Chilcotin Jetboat Adventures, is almost guaranteed to appeal to
the speed demon in all of us, while promoting a healthy appreciation
for the natural wilderness and people who lived in it.
Green
who has had years of experience driving jetboat's, captains the
boat comfortably, face turned into the wind. He turns often to share
tidbits of local history or to point out wildlife along the shore,
while Lupien perches on back of the boat, keeping an eye on everything.
Both have easy warm smiles, and their enthusiasm for what their
doing shows.
Green
grew up near Meldrum Creek, his father half Cree and his mother
Tsilhqot'in. The stories of his ancestors become part of the tour,
and part of the experience.
Recalling
the book Three Against the Wilderness, Green relates the scene where
author Eric Collier and his family get stuck with their sleigh in
a snowbank in the bitter cold of winter, near what is now Green's
home by Riske Creek. "They start to walk because they smell
a campfire," he says. "They found some native people cooking
moose meat and drinking tea. Those were my great-grandparents, when
my grandmother was just little."
Green
and Lupien's plans include several different tours, including a
dinner cruise and a cultural trip up the Fraser to explore Xats'ull
Village. Today, the cruise is all about wildlife and the stunning
landscape along the river.
This
cruise doesn't disappoint. Bald and golden eagles fly overhead all
day, while along the shore a mother otter and her three tiny babies
dip in and out of the water. A group of Bighorns make an impossible
dash, seeming to run sure-footedly on air in front of an almost
horizontal sandy bank. A fat black bear trundles up a bank towards
a shady spot.
And
then there's the speed. Jetboating down a rushing river is one thing,
but jetting back up against the powerful current is another. At
620 horsepower, this boat has the power to fly, but Green uses it
sparingly, choosing instead to cruise at a speed that allows passengers
to soak up the smells and sights of the river.
"You'd
never imagine living in Williams Lake, what it is like down here,"
he says to the group. Still he does offer a few thrills when he
speeds up a bit, plumes of water shooting out on either side of
the boat.
"People
seem to really enjoy getting splashed," he says.
"As
soon as we just give 'er, everybody starts to laugh." Green
feels good about what they're doing. "I think we've got something
to offer," he says.
What
they're offering is a unique perspective on the landscape and the
people who long ago forged lives within it, and it's well worth
the trip.
